528i real sluggish under 3,000 rpm (archive)

Odd question for a 1985 528i - but this one is very poor low down, until it gets to 3,000 rpm when it takes off like a scalded cat.

This car has 155,000 miles on and when I got it several things needed doing. Tickover is now lovely and even with a clean pick-up and the engine never misfires however hard I treat it.

BUT - although the engine continues pulling, it feels like I only have a 1 litre engine between 1,000 and 3,000 rpm. If I boot it between these revs it accelerates slowly but cleanly up to 3,000rpm when, as I said, it feels like a turbo has cut in.

Driving sedately around our narrow lanes the car is very docile and drives beautifully - it is only when I am in a hurry on a main road that it feels real sluggish.

I know they thrive on revs but this seems more than that - 2.8 litres feels more like 1 litre until it hits 3,000 rpm

OR ARE THEY ALL LIKE THIS ? - THIS IS MY FIRST 528i SO I REALLY DON'T KNOW

Your thoughts would be helpful

Regards from Jim B (Somerset, UK)
