I have an '88 535is. Have Infinity 4x6 plates in the kick panels, Polk 1" tweeters in the doors by the mirrors, Infinity 5 1/2's in the rear deck, a 12" polk sub in the trunk (no cutting as of yet), and a 5 channel Kenwood amp, pushing 40watts to all component speakers and 120 to the sub continuously. The system sounds great overall, but these cars are SOLID. The trunk dampens the sub a LOT, but it's still bassy enough for me. Don't need to be bumping, just hearing the lows. If you want it to really thump, you'll probably need to cut out either a section of the back deck or behind the arm rest. I personally think that the seat itself (and armrest) do most of the dampening of the noise though. If you could "port" the back deck with a tube, it should give you a LOT of bass.
With my trunk open it is super LOUD!! I'm glad that you can't really hear it outside the car, but inside the system is loud and sounds great - that's what I'm looking for... not attracting attention, so I'm happy with the dampened effect now.
