BMW was WAY behind the rest of the industry concerning integration of the heating and AC systems that they are not connected. Thats why BMW has two blowers and a seperate AC switch.

Its a sucky system, but thats it if you like the handling.

There is a good reason for this. If you are running heat, it is nice to be able to bring in fresh cold air. The reason is to minimize fatigue. The Euro owners manual (UK) describes this much better as to WHY it is this way.
