I'm a Ford trans tech (sorry). It sounds like an electronics problem. Disconnecting the TCU probably caused a default strategy to 3rd (Ford uses 2nd). Having a working 1st and rev pretty much eliminates mechanical problems. I'd check for the speed sensor input to the TCM. If it doesn't know how fast it's going, it doesn't know when to shift out of 1st.
