I would check the fuel lines connected at the sending unit/fuel pick up/fuel return. There are also a couple of rubber gaskets at the sending unit also. The top of the sending unit where the hoses come out is actually below the top of the tank so you can really get a fume problem with even a little leak. Or just fill it up, pull out the trunk mat and remove the three screws that hold the access cover down and see what looks wet.
