... make sure that there's sufficient fluid in there in the first place. If you're going to bleed it, that'll take care of any air that's gotten in the system, but if the fluid is really far down when you start, I'd be on the lookout for leaking fittings, master, slave, or hose(s).

Tom, you're an awful nice guy to volunteer to do all that stuff, especially with regards to replacing the clutch on a 4x4! I hope the father-in-law is appreciative!


What if you shut it off when you're having trouble? Does it go in to gear easily then? Is it worse on a hot day?

Start simple. Bleed the clutch hydraulics.
