How is the effect of engaging reverse? Do the gears grind or does it go in nicely?

If it grinds into reverse, I have feeling that the clutch plate is not disengaging completely so that when you try to engage the gears, the input shaft of the tranny is still spinning, which makes the synchros try to stop the input shaft to allow engagement.

If this is the case, more than a few trys will completely destroy teh tranny and require a rebuild. Do not force it until you find/fix the cause.
