what offset is needed? I know you need to roll fender lips.

For 17x8.0" as a rule,and for 17x8.5"or 17x9.0" for sure,use 13/15mm front,and 23/28mm (best 25/28mm)rear offsets.Especially if you use lowered springs.
Right now I run E36 17x8.5"rims(38mm offset to start) and H&R spacers to 13mm front,and 23mm rear,as the absolute widest that will safely clear the car under heavy load.When I lower the car,I'll go 28mm in the rear.Tried 18mm front,but tire was a bit too close to the strut.
Some clearances depend on the sidewall of the model tire you use.
