It's the plastic material that oxidizes, not the silver portion.

In any case, it deteriorates very quickly.

The chrome window trim is sprayed onto the melamine. It fades or better said wears off. To see it again, you have to replace the window trim. I prefer mine blacked out. The only places that are chrome are the corners which are real pieces of metal. Likewise, I hate the chromed plastic kidneys in the grill, so I sanded them down and painted them black also. It looks BAD!
