Auto gear-change - help (archive)

Posted by Jim Butterworth on November 25, 2001 at 18:55:34:

I run both a 1988 3-series and a 1985 5-series, both with the excellent 4HP22 4-speed gearbox.

The change on the 3-series (operated by levers) is as slick as one could wish - excellent. BUT the (cable) change on the identical 'box and gate on the 5-series is "sticky". Indeed the previous owners had seriously loosened the selector handle by the force they had to apply over the years. Careful lubrication of the mechanism made some difference, but not much.

Yes, I know we drive on the wrong side of the road over here so the forces on the lever from our left hands are off-centre BUT the 3-series works slickly - so why not the 5-series on the same 'box ?

Am I the only one (ie a fault on my vehicle) - or is this a common ailing ? More importantly, is it possible to swap a 3-series mechanism into the 5-series ?

Thanks to all the experts who will rush to my assistance

Regards from Jim B (Somerset UK)
