I cleaned out the cable as you suggested and re-lubed with spray grease - this has a thin base to run the grease in and which then evaporates to leave the grease on the surface. Much better.

I also reversed the gear handle (didn't realise it was possible, but there is a threaded hole at the right point on the other side of the lever) which looks odd - but at least I've now got a decent engineering job and a more natural straight pull (right hand drive over here).

Lever movement still not as good as the 3-series but much better.
