front wheel thumping??? (archive)

My "new" '88 535is has a very distinct thumping noise coming from the vicinity of the right front wheel. It is most noticible at very low speeds, with or without brakes applied. Today, I grabbed the wheel (with the car on the ground) and gave it a good shake and -lo and behold - I felt a little bit of play. The same vigorous shaking on the other three wheels yields no play at all.

Any ideas about what this could be? Thanks for any advice.
