I haven't done anything with the 535, but I've swapped a short-shifter from a 86 to a 84 528e. Dropped the exhaust from the header and disconnected the driveshaft. Some have posted that they were able to change without disconnecting the driveshaft, but even with small hands it would be tight. Might be worth it to change the output shaft seals too while your at it. I didn't do this on the 84, but have a 325is thats leaking pretty bad right now with 170k miles on it.

O-K I've scanned the archives and visited the websites. Now I need to ask the question: Do I need to lower the transmission in my 88 535is in order to do a complete shifter upgrade? It's not that I can't do it, I replaced the tranny in my 320i a couple of years ago, it's just that I don't really want to mess with it that much. I have rather small hands if that makes a difference. I guess I'd just like to hear from someone who has done it.

Thanks

Mark DeDionisio
