The struts and shocks are Bilstein Comforts with 66k on them. The rear suspension has never been worked on other than the shocks. There is no clunking or thumping from the rear, even backing up. The tires are good.
What are the chances that replacing the dogbones (aka rear axle carriers) will take care of the problem? The rubber boots on the dogbones are basically gone - that is, there is no protection from the elements.
Other possible problems that I've read about in the archives are:
-stabilizer links
-rear subframe bushings
-rear trailing arm bushings
I'm hoping that I can get by with just the dogbones.
If the dogbones are the problem, how tough are they to replace? Bentley doesn't address removing them separate from removing the trailing arms. I read in the archives that they can be replaced without jacking up the car. Has anyone done this? Any follow-up would be greatly appreciated. This car is in great shape - my wife has driven it for 10 years and I want to keep it going.
