I just came out from under the hood of a 635CSi with that problem.

The PS pump made a horrid mechanical noise and vibration when first started. It partly died away after a bit, but awful to hear. It's not like the sound when you turn the wheel to full lock at all, much more "biting" to the ear.

The fluid was ugly brown, not red at all. The filter at the bottom of the PS fluid reservoir was partially crushed under the metal plate cover. We siphoned out most of the old fluid - that we could, anyway - and put in excactly a quart of new Dexron III. We'll get another filter when we can, the Dealer wants $22 and change for the **** thing.

The pump is silent. My friend is happy. In another week, when the new quart is thoroughly mixed with the remaining old ATF, we'll bail out a quart and put in one more new quart, and reinstall a new filter.

Hope your problem is as simple as this.
