There's a black knob (it could be silver also) on as you described, a long silver container. The knob is approximately three inches in diameter. It is readily accessible when you open the hood. It twists off. If you look on the dipstick (should have a red handle, near the black or silver knob-cap) between the marks represents one quart. Check the dipstick before and a few minutes after you add oil, bein careful to not add too much or too little. I hope this helps.

If you find the dipstick reads there is no need to add oil, then the sensor might be bad. Let us know how it goes.

I'm car sitting and need to put in motor oil. Does it go in the long, rectangular silver containter?
