Do some archive searches -- this is a common subject. To start, here are a couple of archive threads which should tell you most of what you need:

Thread from 2001 week 34.

Thread from 2001 week 50.

You can't use a 528 tranny in a 535, but you can use the parts out of a 635. The latter is what I did; the only part that doesn't interchange with a 635 is the pedal cluster bracket - you'll need an E28 piece, one from any E28 will work.

I got my parts from Bimmerworld. Cost from them, including shipping, was $975, and I guess the whole deal cost me ~$1300.

Is it "adviseable?" Yes, if you are mechanically inclined and do lots of work yourself. If you aren't comfortable doing more than an oil change, I'd suggest you not do it unless you want to pay $$$ for labor.

Can I locate a manual transmission from maybe even a beater 528 or some other depreciated BMW to convert my automatic 535i to a manual trans? Also, which limited slip diffs will fit in this car? Has anybody got a parts car with appropriate pieces for a driveline swap?
Thanks,
-Brian
