Right off the bat, the E34 has a lot more to go wrong...a lot of electronic features...

The E28 is more fun to drive, the E34 is more luxury.

Also a E34 is a lot more money to buy!

Stay away from pre 92 E34's. They have the majority of the problems...bad dashes, door panels etc...The V8's had a problem with the engine block and US gas. The best for reliability in a E34 is a 94-95 525i. It has VANOS and a Maintinance free engine...no valve adjustment, double overhead cam...and with a Jim C upgrade, decent performance.

93 is the last year for the 535i...and is a rare find.

I sold my E34 535i to buy a E28 535is....

That would be your best bet.
