If you do the installation work yourself, you could do a very decent job for about $3500. The rear isn't really acceptable without big modifications, but a set of sport Bilsteins on good springs will help a little.
I had my rear suspension modified to coil-overs with camber plates as well, but that was $35oo additional due to welding in the mounts. It was definitely worth the money.
The coil-overs allow you to adjust ride height as well as stiffness.
I'd go for some OZ wheels in 17". Don't go bigger. The OZ are light (a BIG deal) and at $600 ea or so are quite reasonably priced compared to comparable wheels I looked at. Alpinas are junk and just for looks-forget them.
Don't forget the brakes. If you upgrade the suspension, you will be driving everywhere at outrageous speeds and need decent brakes. Low budget way is e34 740i brakes, but Brembo are better, though I couldn't justify the $3K price just yet.
Anything less is just playing with it.
