certainly couldn't have done it, but having your head done by a competent machine shop is an absolute must. Bimmer heads are (according to my machine shop guy) anything, but run of the mill. For example, the head in question was supposedly reworked by someone else. Yet something told me to have my guy look it over and voila, it had a very small crack in a non-pressure sensitive area that was easily welded. AND,the valve guides were not seated correctly, so I had to get new seals. Let the professionals do the things there are good at, and I'll turn the wrenches. That's my motto.

I'll try to put some notes together this week. It's been a few months since I did the project and I've slept (and killed a few brain cells)since then. BTW, do you have the M30B34 motor?

Good Luck on your project.

Dave

Dave:
I'd love to see a writeup on this, as I'm thinking about having some headwork done on my 6er. Since most of my experience has been with classic American cars, the BMW engine with its OHC head, FI, and sophisticated electronics is a bit intimdating. Nothing that can't be overcome with some good instructions and pointers, however.

I plan on having the machine work and some porting done at a reputable shop in L.A., so my questions would mostly pertain to the easiest way to R&R the head. Thanks!
