I unplugged the O2 sensor for a test and the surge went away. Although the surge was barely perceptable, I did notice the difference. I think you'll find the connector along the firewall. It only takes a second.

'85 635 auto - Checked archives (E28) O2 sensor? Dirty injectors? Engine surges on light-medium acceleration, worse when engine cold. Not too bad on flat out. Thing that throws me is the idle is great, much better than my '87 535. Did the "hot soak", seemed to help a v. little bit. Man, the "hot soak" got scary. When I sucked the last bit in, the engine did't stall and when I shut off the ignition I got major dieseling for what seemed like forever. I appreciate any suggestions from the E28 board. The E24 board's archive system never seems functional. Thanks, petalumabud
