Sometimes engine problems feel like driveline slip. In a little 5-speed Mazda I had, I thought my clutch was slipping--all the symptoms, I knew it was old. Basically, I had to rev it to about 4000 and dump the clutch to get it to go. Lower than that and it just seemed to slip and bog down. Turned out my intake boot had a tear in it, and that's why the engine couldn't develop any power down low. But it wasn't totally consistent, either. So, like I said, engine probs can masquerade as all sorts of things. I would check vacuum, intake, etc, maybe fuel system.
