When my 528e was new, the headlight and foglight switches were illuminated. This is the image of the back of the swich. There is a plug with a small nonfunctioning bulb, which I unplugged from the foglight switch. There appears to be an open socket in the back of the headlight switch portion - what goes in here? I don't see any loose wire with lamp sockets in the vicinity.

Also, I found a loose wire with a lamp hanging behind the ashtray. Any idea where this goes? Thanks.

I just replaced those two bulbs on Saturday. The tricky one was the head light bulb. It looks like an empty socket with no wires. Just pull on it and it should slide right out. You will find that it is similar to the twist-in sockets except for some reason they made this one a bayonnet. You will be able to insert the same type of bulb that is used on the fog light.
Good luck.
