question about e28 chassis and modification (archive)

I really love the E28 body style and was thinking about buying one and modifying it. I really know nothing about the cars so here come a couple of questions.

What engines were available? Which is the best for modifications? Is there a common engine swap that people do to enhance the performance of the car or does the stock engine provide sufficient performance?

Could I do this all cheaper than buying an E28 M5?
