I really love the E28 body style and was thinking about buying one and modifying it. I really know nothing about the cars so here come a couple of questions.

What engines were available? Which is the best for modifications? Is there a common engine swap that people do to enhance the performance of the car or does the stock engine provide sufficient performance?

Could I do this all cheaper than buying an E28 M5?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Lots of folks add to the 535 model as it is the most powerful without the ///Mgine. The repair and maintenance of the M5 is very expensive compared to the 535 or 528. The 528 has a hi torque low reving engine not really designed for high performance. The 535 (or older 533) with the 3.43 (3.2) litre inline six is the better choice. Add to it a suspension, chip, exhaust, intake upgrades and of course the Hartge head and valve cover recommended by Duke on this board and you've got something. But really, www.m535i.org talks about engine upgrades and limits the engine with lots of work to about 275 HP or so. Check the link out and get an idea of what direction to go. Lots of advice here on any mod you might consider, except I have never seen a detailed discussion of fuzzy dice or white wall tires.
