You must replace the SI battereies or you will soon lose the fuel and temp gauges as well. I have heard that the speedo gears go if the batteries go completely. Gears cost about $60 for the three.

All the instruments are run from the rechearageble nicad batteries.

BMW does not recommend replacing them, and a new SI board shouold be bought-it's about $275.

Some people have luck replacing them with Radio Shak batteries for about $7 per pair.
