Tell me about the 535is automatic tranny... (archive)

I found a 1988 535is for a good price but...it has an automatic transmission and i wanted the 5 spd. How reliable are these automatic transmissions? Will the car still be fun to drive with an auto? I guess it has a "sport mode". CAn anyone tell me about their experiences with the auto? Thanks.
