I bought this car yesterday it's a red '87 535is w/ 160K (went by the buying rule). It has the ugliest 15" rims I've ever seen. They look like flying saucers, but they have new michelins so they don't look that bad. New CD player w/ what looks like new speakers, and some kind of built in radar detector. And other than 3 fixes[not yet fixed]not to bad. This a.m. I adjusted the valves and AFM, fixed the vacuum leaks, changed oil, gaped plugs, rotor, dist cap, adj. throttle butterfly, blah, blah, blah. The three things that I did not fix are new issues. I would appreciate any help on the follwing:

1. Brake pedal is mush and brakes weak for first 1" of pedal travel, then shit kicks in. (brake bomb?) I know the switch on top of the power flow regulator is leaking, but I don't think that is the problem.

2. I've got a fuel pump going out. Is there anything that co-incides w/ this that will also need addressed?

3. The tach and instant mpg gauges do not work. Haven't even thought about this yet so I'm clueless.

The things yet fixed that I know how to do:
trunk and tail light gaskets
sunroof drain check and clean
antifreeze, brake, diff, and tranny fluid change

maybe next weekend

thanks

I just fixed this problem with my 88 528e. It depends on how much electrical savy and time you have. I don't have either, so I pulled my insturment cluster out and sent it to Programma (800)668-8843. It cost me $220 to have the SI batteries/board replaced. ALL my guages work work perfect now. I had the SI lights diconnected because they are nothing but a pain in the ass. Look at the archives - you have the potential to f#$% some things up if you don't know what you are doing or the old batteries leaked on the board. These guys are EXPERTS on this board and saved me major $$$ by diagnosing a problem that a "BMW mechanic" could tell me.

Good Luck and ALWAYS rely on this site,

Tom K
