If the very top of your strut is NOT either a hex or flat blade, you can use a grinder or file to shape the top 1/4" of the shaft (above the nut) to look like a slotted screwdriver (that is, grind opposite sides of the threads to make the top 1/4" a blade about 3/16" thick) so you can hold it with an adjustable wrench while you break the nut loose with a box wrench below.

When you get the nut up where you can no longer hold the flats you made, use a needle nose Vise Grip below the nut on the threads where it can get a good bite.
