It could be a head gasket, but that's the last thing I'd suspect.

The first thing I do when I have a leak that's hard to track down is to clean the engine first. When engines are dirty, oil can seem to come from anywhere. I use Espree Wheel Magic since it gets all the junk off and doesn't hurt paint or aluminum.

After it's clean, drive it a day or so and then feel all around the head with your hand and a paper towel and you'll find out where the leak is. It could be from the metal plate on the back of the head, so make sure you clean that area off well and check there too.

it burns oil... but not out of the tailpipe. Usually it doesn't burn until I'm stopped and the engine is shut off. Smoke comes up the passenger side firewall and out from around the hood there. I checked the valve cover gasket and it's solid, I cannot see any leaks from the top, and the oil/coolant look clean. 2 thoughts came to my mind now... is there a seal on the back of the head where the cam sits? or could this be a bad headgasket?

the car is an 88 735i (5 speed) with 145k miles on it. I know this isn't the e32 board, but you guys here seem to have more wisdom.

I'm familiar with m20 engines, but not m30... please help
thanks
