If it not the oil pressure switch, check the cover on the back of the head. There is a seal on one of the bolts that has a habit of leaking when worn out. You may need a small mirror to really see this.

it burns oil... but not out of the tailpipe. Usually it doesn't burn until I'm stopped and the engine is shut off. Smoke comes up the passenger side firewall and out from around the hood there. I checked the valve cover gasket and it's solid, I cannot see any leaks from the top, and the oil/coolant look clean. 2 thoughts came to my mind now... is there a seal on the back of the head where the cam sits? or could this be a bad headgasket?

the car is an 88 735i (5 speed) with 145k miles on it. I know this isn't the e32 board, but you guys here seem to have more wisdom.

I'm familiar with m20 engines, but not m30... please help
thanks
