There's an aftermarket cat available that hooks up to the exhaust manifold directly into a 2 pipe setup, unlike the stock one-into-two. Guy at the shop was able to weld up the crack I had under the heat shield - right at the cat junction - so I can put it off a new one for a while. Anyway, he said the cat is $250.00....the part looked good to me.

I have an '88 535i and the cat looks like swiss cheese, I pulled off the heat shield and there are several holes. Should I just have it done at a shop or does anyone have any tips on an aftermarket or free flow? I don't want to go with the oem or BMW replacement because I am a college student and have very limited funds.

As always I appreciate any help you can give.
Thank you,
Rob Courtright.
