Signs of imminent water pump failure (archive)

What are the signs of an imminent water pump failure?
I hear a noise in the engine compartment, the kind you hear when the alt belt is loose. Except it occurs only at times while driving, and under load. It stops as soo as I put the gear in neutral (manual trans). Does not occur at idling.
Hope it's not the pump.
I plan to try to tighten the belt but it's very cold now!
