I believe what you are refering to is the "salvage title", a practice I hate as it tells you nothing useful, a salvage vehicle could be a theft recovery with zero damage and a non salvage could have been destroyed in an accident, look at the car, notthe title, I own 3 salvage vehicles and have never had a problem, one is in the midst of a full restoration, my worst car was a perfectly mantained 1 owner subaru, the thing constantly had problems!

Secondly, if you are paying for carfax call DMV, they will tell you the same info for free.
