My '85 535i with over 200K, is still very zippy.

Main problems I've encountered are relativly minor (Knock on Wood). New radiator, AC compressor rebuild, CAT/Muffler replacement, driveshaft center bearing, . . . minor stuff.

I suggest having aqualified BMW mechanic go over the car BEFORE you buy it. Try to have the seller share the cost.
