Agreed on the hauling in cars; I had a SAAB story with a Yakima rack that hauled quite a few roofing squares, sheet rock, furniture, etc.
The problem with cars made into pickups is that when you chop off the top (lots of experience here, we used to zip the tops off '50's era tubs and use them as jeeps) all the structural integrity goes out the window. Fine for hauling potato chips but don't try sacks of concrete.
