I can answer the first question. There is no Class action suite I know of. There is a problem with the E34 series, E32 Series, and E31 4.0 L V8 and 3.0 V8 sold in the US 1993 to 1995. It is a problem with US gas more than the engine. BMW extended the warrenty to 6 years, 100,000 miles and would replace the "Block" if it failed a series of leak down and compression tests.

I have never seen real numbers, but I know several 540i and 530i owners who have never had problems with the engines.

It hasn't affected resale too much in real life, but I have seen cars with replaced engines and documentation go for $500 more.
