i've had similar problem, on 2 84 533i's-twice it was main relay,once it was in tank fuel pump and i think i had to replace fuel pump relay
if you have a bently,it gives you several things to try

Just stopped running in mid-stride. Turns over seems like it wants to start but just won't.

... is it the main relay? Going to start fixing it tomorrow any tips would be a great help.
