Burning oil... tests? (archive)

Is there any test for burning oil? I know how to tell if it is, but how can you tell the difference between oil leaking down past the valves, and oil getting by the piston rings? Short of taking the engine apart of course.... Also, is there any way to tell if you have bent valve? I am asking this for my diesel, i know that probably makes a difference, but i would like to know for gas engines as well.
