I don't know of a speciifc test per se. But you can have your oil analyzed for $20.00 and it will tell you if you have significant soot in the oil (you did say this was a diesel right) and or fuel in the oil. Both of these scenarios would suggest piston ring wear. If these numbers were low, the oil could be leaking by the valve gudies and burning out the exhaust.
