If you are using the factory amp, I may know what your problem is: When you switch to the CD, you are shutting off the amp.

In the original wiring, the amp enable and power antenna enable signals are white wires that are connected together behind the radio. When the antenna goes up, the amp turns on. When the antenna goes down, the amp turns off. A single signal (say 5 times fast) from the radio controls both.

Your Sony head unit probably retracts the antenna when you play a CD. In doing so, it probably turns off the amp as well because the wires are connected together. I expect there's a separate output on your Sony that's meant to control an amp. All you have to do is separate the two white wires and plug them into the correct outputs from the radio.

The good news is the two wires are connected right behind the radio and they easily disconnect. The bad news is they're both white. The good news is it's easy to find out which is which: just touch one of them to the red & white wire (battery at all times). If it makes the antenna go up, it's the antenna- connect it to the antenna control. If it doesn't, it isn't- connect it to the amp control.

HTH

My new head unit (Sony CDX-MP30) is in the car, but acting strange. The radio works fine. The CD player will play, but I won't get any sound.

My install method was to hook the positive speaker wires into the existing speakers, the unswitched lead from the unit directly to the unswitched lead in the factory wiring (red/white). This also left the wire that's part of the factory unswitched lead connector not attached to anything (possible ground?). For the switched lead I took the wire from the unit, attached a 1/4 inch spade and plugged it into the factory plug (purple/white wire). The only ground seems to be the one that shares a plug with the switched lead.

Can anyone see what I've done wrong? I just can't figure it out. Any help or alternative install methods are appreciated.

Thanks,
Rich in WI
