Chris '88 535iS asked
1. Are stress bars a sham....do they make a worthwhile difference in handling?

On a car as old and flexible as this, a front stress bar adds substantially to the car's rigidity, and right where it can be used. I noticed an improvement on both our cars.

A rear stress bar shouldn't do much if anything to improve handling, but the factory includes them as part of the trailer hitch package.

2. Can I install them myself at home?

Yes, it's quick and easy, requiring only a socket and rachet handle. Use a torque wrench too if you want to do it right.

I used an Eibach bar on our E38. Had all sorts of trouble because the length of the bar didn't match the span between the towers. Wound up drilling an extra pair of holes in one end bracket. A year later, I used BMP Design's bar with the "Eccentric Pre-Loader" length adjuster on our E28. Total work about 15 minutes.
