The E28 chassis. The E39 sport wheel does not look correct on the chassis IMO. I also think that if you can achieve the correct look you can then do a +1/+2 look to compliment the car. Going with 17's “just because” doesn't work for me...

I saw a beautiful 1969 Camaro with 18's, (they were a remake of the classic "Mag" wheel of the period) here in Seattle the other day...Absolutely gorgeous car. The look worked because the rims looked correct only larger in diameter…
