I have thought about doing this, only because it is a good place to get a hard to track vacuum leak. There is a little valve between the canister and the block that can go bad, leaving it open at all times and hence creating a leak. Also, at least in the M5, there is a good bit of well-hidden fuel line between the valve and the block inlet (which is actually on one of the ICV hoses). If this hose developed a crack etc, you would never find it. So if I ever were to do it, I would just remove the line from the ICV hose and plug the hole in the ICV hose.
Read on the M535i website that there may be a benefit to removing the charcoal canister. Here is the excerpt from the web site: "... the charcoal canister system was an after-thought by BMW to abide by the EPA laws. Personally, after reviewing how the system and the problems that it cause, such as rough idle, incorrect mixture, poor emissions and difficulty in filling, I see now reason to keep the system on the car unless it is required by the emissions laws in your state."
Having said that and forgeting emissions laws for a moment. Has anyone done it? Have you seen a benefit? What was required to remove it? Just run new fuel line? Thanks in advance for any posts!
