My company and myself personally have been involved in building serveral web based affinity groups. Most times these groups are made to sell a product, gather demographic info and the like.
The one thing that you never want to do it piss the people in the group off - because without them, your site in nothing. The site has existed for many years (in internet years kinda like dog years but in reverse). I kind of understand why they want to keep the for sale stuff in a certain place...It makes for easier "management". But a web community is very much like a #D one in as much as people wantto have rights, have personalities, etc....if they are not allowed these things - especially when they have been given certain liberties for YEARS and then have them taken away, they go BALLISTIC! Anyways, I created some forums....They work and they are mine...not my company's...they are not in place to make money. End of story. I am not suggesting that you all abandon this one for that...but if you wish to, the space is already there.Roadfly has provided a fantastic resource to the bimmer community. I imagine it will continue to for a long time. I am not bashing it, nor Charlie nor Alan. All I am saying is a large group of people can become angry when the suddenly feel that their rights have been threatened. I know that the retort from the 'management' will be that if you read the terms of service you will see that you have absolutely no rights, perceived or otherwise....well this is all well and fine in legal-ese, but it does not change the human factor...one of emotion and pride.
My MUCH more than 2 cents.
Hope I didnt bore you.
