I hit a 4X4 piece of wood at 60 mph. It resulted in two bent wheels. The shimmy was incredible. I had the wheels straightened by the Wheel Collision Center in Columbus Ohio. They can straighten minor damage and refinish the wheel if you also desire.
As for sensitivity, my 88M5 seems to transmit wheel balance, alignment etc through the wheel. I also replaced the thrust bushings only to have to replace them with even more heavy duty to eliminate the shimmy. Even though the PO may have done so, you might want to have them checked again. My car now has bushings from a 750. This solved the problem.
