I'm considering buying an 88 M5, and I was just wondering what I should look for. I have heard that there is a problem on these cars with the crank hub.
Paul

In the Oct 99 Bimmer magazine, a noted BMW shop with much M-experience commented that in the E28 M5, "The crank hub that holds the harmonic balancer flexes and loosens, which can destroy the keyway, which can destroy the crankshaft. We recommend replacing the stock crank hub with one from Frank Fahey that is made of a superior material."

A concerned M5 owner asked in the Oct 00 issue "If the hub has made it to 112,000 miles and the car has been serviced more completely than BMW recommends... is it still a danger?" The Bimmer Tech replied, "There have been crank hub failures with the stock unit at all mileages, but the determining factor seems to be sustained high rpm use near or at redline. This is why the problem often shows up on M5s that see a lot of track time. A performance chip...can exacerbate the situation because of the higher rev limit. For the money, we'd get the Fahey hub. If the stock unit fails, it makes a real mess and an expensive one, too"

BTW, I'd recommend ordering the Oct 99 back issue of Bimmer magazine--- it has an E28 M5 on the cover and a nice accompanying article.

Hope this helps,
