Are M5 diffs better than reg E24/28/30? (archive)

I noticed an interesting thing when I replaced the rear subframe bushings. The M5 differential and rear cover look completely different than their regular E28/24/30 sisters. The diffs are all interchangeable, you just need the different rear cover. But the drain plug in the M5 diff is on the left side, the rear cover upper mount is offset (to the left), and the rubber mount bolts to the chassis slightly offset to account for the offset upper rear mount. Also, there are thick sheet metal gussets that run from one side to the other on each semi-trailing arm. I don't think they're on the regular 535.

So my question is: Is the M5 diff stronger, better? Are the internals different?

Just curious...
