In Reply to: Are M5 diffs better than reg E24/28/30? posted by JamesM on November 29, 2000 at 14:22:23:
I noticed an interesting thing when I replaced the rear subframe bushings. The M5 differential and rear cover look completely different than their regular E28/24/30 sisters.
As well it should. It is completely different.
The diffs are all interchangeable,
No they are not. The M5 and M6 came with the stronger diff that was also used in the V12 cars. These diffs have a different number of splines on the output shaft and the M5 and M6 half shafts are also stronger.
you just need the different rear cover.
If you are swaping an E28 for and E30 or vise versa
But the drain plug in the M5 diff is on the left side, the rear cover upper mount is offset (to the left), and the rubber mount bolts to the chassis slightly offset to account for the offset upper rear mount. Also, there are thick sheet metal gussets that run from one side to the other on each semi-trailing arm. I don't think they're on the regular 535.
So my question is: Is the M5 diff stronger, better? Are the internals different?
As for interchanging the internal, I don't believe anyone has tried because there is no point. If you want a 3.73 or a 3.91( the 2 M car diffs) then just use one out of a six cylinder E30. They are plenty strong enough for any regular 535i. The M cars are able to put out so much more power that BMW decided to upgrade the diff. But for strength reasons the M5 diff is better.
