Replacing Heater Blower/Fan (archive)

My '89 535 (130k miles)has a heater fan that is starting to sound like a bag of cats being strangled with piano wire- or in other words, squealing on all speed but the very highest, even then its now starting to make noise.
From past expierience with other BMW's, this means a blower replacement might soon be in the cards. Has anyone done or had this done? Is this a repair shop job involving dash removal? What might this adventure cost? Thanks in advance! Is there any hope of somehow lubing the fan or since its such a job getting to it, is it better to just replace it considering the age and miles on the car?
